In aftermath of the Iranian Revolution, music was banned and artists  were imprisoned,  exiled, or worse. "The Voice of Dust and Ash" tells the remarkable story of Maestro Mohammad Reza Shajarian. His voice, celebrated as one of 'NPR's 50 Greatest Voices of All Time,' broke through the silence, challenging the regime's oppressive boundaries and evolving into an emblem of resistance and freedom. The film intricately weaves Shajarian's extraordinary life in his own words, through the prism of his most revered song, “Morq-e Sahar,” often revered as the Unofficial National Anthem of Iranian Freedom. More than just a musical masterpiece, this song encapsulates the essence of Shajarian's artistry and commitment, embodying a profound message of hope and the relentless pursuit of freedom. 'The Voice of Dust and Ash' not only chronicles a journey of artistic courage but also echoes a resonant call for liberty that transcends time and borders, mirroring the ongoing global and Iranian struggle for human rights.

The directorial debut of Iranian American filmmaker Mandana Biscotti, the film is a definitive exploration of Shajarian’s music, lyrics and songs- all of which coincide with Iran’s watershed moments. It features appearances by several Iranian notables in the Arts and Academia. The score is by three-time Academy Award® nominated composer J. Ralph, whose credits include Man on Wire, The Cove, Virunga, Racing Extinction, and Jim: The James Foley Story.
